1). You're Going Down.
Weird track to hear as a Ballad. WHile it sounds cool, the lyrics and melody line to not translate as well as one would hope when put into this context. The choruses sound great, but the track is unmemorable until the instrumental break in the third minute.
2). Riptide
This track is much better suited for acoustic instrumentals then the previous track...In fact im pretty sure ive heard it acoustic in the past. The added string section in the background is a much needed improvement. The song sounds great, minus the chorus, which makes the song sound a little...Im not sure...Kinda like a Pop song...Im not sure why. Other than the Chorus, this track is superb.
3). Maybe
the song sounds almost exactly like the original, minus the pounding drums. eh. I mean, its a good song, but it was certaintly the least inspired song they ever did. Considering I love Sick Puppies, this is still a good song. I like this version better, but like I said...the differences are minor
4). Odd One
One of my least favorite SP songs to this point, this song fixes the problems the original had by replacing the boring opening the original had with a slightly lo-fi version of the chorus before fading into an acoustic version of the song. It sounds SO much better in the acoustic setting. Emma's voice on the bridge is much clearer
5). Dont Walk away
the Vocal part is given to Emma for the verses, though shim and emma still share it on the chorus. I can see why Shim is the lead singer...Emma's voice, while good, is...Different. Especially in this song it sounds almost creepy. Perhaps the song is slightly below her range? I cant be sure. There is an added string section, which is cool. However, while the original song reminded me of something the Daughtry would release, the new version reminds me of "Apologize" by Justin Timberlake/One Republic. Take your pick, either way it is a pop song.
6) All the same
The song is almost always performed acoustically, so I wasn't expecting any surprising here. However, like with almost every song on this EP, there is a sling string backing. The drums sound slightly more defined then they do on most acoustic versions. One other interesting change is Shim's normal guitar solo being done by the string section. We hear Emma more clearly on the bridge. Plus, Shim has finally fixed a problem that used to exist in acoustic versions, where he seemed afraid to sing to...fiercly. The vocals are now almost exactly like the album version...Which is good because it is such an amazing song.
7). White balloons
The hands down best track from "tripolar" is still an amazing track. The string section is well composed, reminding me of something from the Beatles. Emma sings the ENTIRE first verse, as opposed to just half of it. However, the track would be better if she sang ALL of the verses and Shim stuck to the choruses. The bridge, sung as a duet, is the tracks highlight.
Overall...I mean...SO long as you can stream it online I don't know if its worth buying. I mean, its cool and a definite improvement, certainly better than their last attempt at an acoustic EP. I guess the thing this shows is just how much a a letdown "TriPolar" was compared to "Dressed up as Life". The tracks, in their acoustic form, recapture some of that magic that their first US album had.
granted, the 7 songs only cost 5 bucks on amazon to get all the MP3s. So If your a fanboy like me it is worth it, or if you have never bought a Sick Puppies album and like them, then it is worth getting. If you dont fall into one of those categories...then..yeah. It streams free online for a reason
